Ethiopia passport guide

Uganda eVisa for Ethiopian Citizens

For Ethiopian citizens planning a Uganda holiday, the first check is the passport type. Regional ties and official-passport arrangements do not create a general exemption for ordinary tourists. Use this guide to prepare an accurate application, clarify dates and names and choose a route that matches your trip.

The short answer

Do Ethiopian citizens need a visa for Uganda?

Ethiopian citizens using ordinary passports need a visa for tourism in Uganda and can apply online before travel. Uganda's exemption for Ethiopia is listed for diplomatic and official passports, separately from its ordinary-passport exemptions. Prepare at least six months of passport validity and the tourism documents for your journey. The Uganda Embassy in Addis Ababa links travellers to the official electronic application portal.

Check the ordinary passport rule rather than an official-travel agreement

Uganda's exemption page separates general nationality exemptions from arrangements for diplomatic and official passports. Ethiopia appears in that second category. For a private holiday using an ordinary Ethiopian passport, prepare a visa application instead of relying on a headline about official visa-free travel. A different passport type or an official-duty journey should be checked with the relevant authorities on its own terms.

The Uganda Embassy in Addis Ababa directs its visa link to the electronic immigration portal. Use that official reference when checking an unusual document or a question outside a standard holiday application. The passport you select in the form should be the one you will carry; an exemption available to another member of your group does not change your own application requirements.

Create one reliable set of names and travel dates

Before starting, write down the name fields, passport number, issue date and expiry exactly as they appear on the passport's biodata page. Keep that page beside the application rather than retyping from an older reservation or another identity document. If an organiser has abbreviated the traveller's name, compare the underlying booking with the passport before submitting the visa details.

Use the date format requested by the form and cross-check it with the passport and transport booking. In particular, the date you leave Ethiopia may differ from the date of arrival in Uganda. This is a practical accuracy check, not a special Ethiopian visa condition. Resolve any uncertainty about a name field or passport date through the appropriate channel instead of inventing missing information.

Your application decision

An Ethiopian passport and a regional holiday starting in Uganda

Planning example: An Ethiopian traveller plans to fly to Entebbe and later visit Kenya or Rwanda. The regional visa question concerns that itinerary and its first entry, not whether the flight departs from an East African city.

  • Use Ethiopian nationality and the actual passport type rather than inferring visa-free entry from the region.
  • Compare the regional product if the participating destinations are in the holiday; it does not cover travel in Ethiopia itself.
  • Check name spelling and dates across the passport, flight reservation and English-language itinerary before sending.

Get your documents ready

Uganda eVisa requirements for Ethiopian passport holders

For a Tourist Visa, prepare these files and your travel details. Use the passport you will carry to Uganda. The application checklist changes when you select a different visa category.

  • Passport biodata page

A clear copy of the details page. Your passport needs at least six months of validity.

  • Recent passport photograph

A clear passport-style photograph taken within the last six months.

  • Return ticket

Your return flight or onward travel booking.

  • Accommodation and travel plan

Have your Uganda accommodation address, intended arrival date, entry point and planned stay ready. Keep booking details and a tour plan available if requested.

Upload preparation

The live portal instructions specify JPEG, PNG, BMP or PDF, 5–250 KB per file, with supporting documents in English. Keep the original documents for travel. Further evidence may be requested.

East Africa Tourist Visa

USD 199

Tourism in Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda for 90 days. Enter Uganda first when applying through Uganda. It ends if you leave the three-country area and is not renewable.

Choose East Africa Tourist Visa →

Multiple Visa

From USD 199

For repeated visits to Uganda: USD 199 for 6 or 12 months, or USD 299 for 24 months. Validity does not mean you can stay continuously for that entire period.

Additional evidence includes police clearance, two Uganda referee letters, a reason for multiple entry and proof of Uganda entries and exits during the previous year.

Review Multiple Visa →

Planning more than one country? Read the East Africa Tourist Visa requirements and first-entry guide. For repeated Uganda visits, compare the 6-, 12- and 24-month Multiple Entry choices. Immigration decides approval and the stay permitted.

Being in East Africa does not itself give visa-free entry

Ethiopia is not included in the East African Community's published list of eight partner states. Geographical proximity, a flight through a regional hub or an invitation from a Ugandan tour company should therefore not be treated as proof of exemption. For an ordinary Ethiopian passport, Uganda's own current exemption list is the relevant starting point for the visa decision.

For example, a Uganda-only holiday and a tour taking in Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda are different planning cases. The East Africa Tourist Visa is a specific tourism permission for those three countries, with first entry through the issuing country. It is not an East African residence permit and does not authorise employment. Check an additional destination separately rather than assuming the regional title covers it.

Turn the booking into a clear Uganda arrival plan

If your holiday starts with a stay in Kampala before a guided tour, keep the first accommodation address, tour dates and departure arrangement together. If you stay at several properties, identify which one is the first night's address instead of entering an unrelated later hotel. A short itinerary note helps you complete the form consistently even when transport and accommodation were booked separately.

After submission, distinguish an acknowledgement from an actual decision and check the email channel used for your application. Keep any issued authorisation accessible with the travel passport. If a document request arrives, answer for that file rather than creating a second application simply because the trip date is approaching. Immigration can request further evidence, and the decision and conditions granted control the visit.

Questions from Ethiopian travellers

Are Ethiopian ordinary passports exempt from Uganda visas?

No. Ethiopia appears on Uganda's exemption page for diplomatic and official passport holders, not in the general ordinary-passport list. An Ethiopian tourist using an ordinary passport should prepare a visa application. Check an official-duty case separately before relying on a different arrangement.

Does Ethiopia's location in East Africa remove the visa requirement?

No. Geographical location does not establish a passport exemption. Ethiopia is not among the East African Community's published partner states, and Uganda's ordinary-passport exemption list does not include Ethiopia. Use the actual passport and current immigration rules to choose your application route.

Where does the Uganda Embassy in Addis Ababa direct visa applicants?

The embassy's website links its visa service to Uganda's electronic immigration portal. This gives travellers in Ethiopia an official starting point for checking the application route. Keep enquiries about unusual documents separate from the actual online submission and retain the reference issued for your application.

Can an Ethiopian traveller enter Kenya first on a Uganda-issued East Africa Tourist Visa?

The issuing country must be the first entry into the three-country visa area. If your itinerary begins with admission to Kenya, check the appropriate issuing-country route instead of selecting Uganda solely because it is a later destination. A connection without admission needs its own transit check.

How much is a Uganda visa for Ethiopian citizens?

Uganda Visa's total price per applicant is USD 99 for a Tourist Visa and USD 199 for an East Africa Tourist Visa. Multiple Visa costs USD 199 for 6 or 12 months, or USD 299 for 24 months. The selected total appears before you send your application.

How long does a Uganda eVisa take to process?

The review time depends on the visa category, completeness of the application and immigration checks. Submit before travel and allow time for further document requests. Your intended arrival date is not a promised decision date. Monitor the email address used for the application.

How long can I stay, and when should I use my approval?

A single-entry visit can be granted for up to three months; your issued permission controls the actual stay. Uganda Immigration says the approval authorisation must be used within 90 days of approval. The travel window and the stay granted are different. Read both before departure.
