The short answer

Do Nigerian citizens need a visa for Uganda?

Nigerian citizens travelling on ordinary passports need a visa for Uganda and can apply online before departure. Nigeria is not on Uganda's ordinary-passport visa-exempt list. The Uganda High Commission in Abuja directs applications through the electronic immigration system and encourages travellers to obtain approval before travel. Prepare your passport with at least six months of validity and the documents for your chosen visit category.

How the Uganda High Commission in Abuja fits into your application

The Uganda High Commission in Abuja's visa-services page directs applicants to the electronic visa system and says to obtain approval before travel. It also explains that the mission can provide guidance and assistance where necessary. A consular enquiry is therefore different from submitting a completed online immigration application; keep track of which step you have actually completed.

For a straightforward tourist visit, organise the passport, photograph and journey details before beginning the form. For a question about a different travel document or an unusual immigration history, use the appropriate official contact rather than guessing an answer simply to continue. When a decision or document request arrives, keep it with your application's own reference so that the follow-up relates to the correct file.

Make the holiday plan understandable from the first night

A clear tourism itinerary explains where the traveller will be and when. For example, if you plan two nights in Kampala followed by a guided wildlife trip, record the first accommodation address and the sequence of overnight stops. If an agent supplied the bookings, check the traveller names and dates yourself before they become the basis of your application.

An informal description such as staying with a friend may leave practical details unresolved. Gather the actual address and contact information requested by the chosen category. If the main purpose is visiting family rather than tourism, check the appropriate purpose and supporting evidence through immigration instead of treating every short visit as the same product. Your application should explain the real visit, not merely copy the heading from a booking email.

Your application decision

From Nigeria: document the actual Uganda tourism itinerary

Planning example: A Nigerian traveller plans a short Uganda holiday. Prepare a coherent itinerary and accommodation details, and resolve a different purpose such as study or a work placement before choosing this application route.

  • Keep the passport name, arrival date and accommodation contacts consistent across the application and bookings.
  • Use the Abuja mission for consular questions; visiting an office and submitting an online visa request are different steps.
  • If a meeting, course or placement is the real reason for travel, ask about the appropriate category rather than rewriting it as a holiday.

Planning more than one country? Read the East Africa Tourist Visa requirements and first-entry guide. For repeated Uganda visits, compare the 6-, 12- and 24-month Multiple Entry choices. Immigration decides approval and the stay permitted.

Separate sightseeing from work, studies and organised events

Abuja's official visa guidance lists distinct purposes, including ordinary visits, business, studies and transit. A Nigerian traveller going to Uganda for a holiday should prepare a tourism application; someone attending a professional programme or taking up work needs to check the actual activity first. A short duration does not make all travel purposes interchangeable.

Consider a trip that combines sightseeing with a conference. Before selecting a tourist route, establish what permission fits the principal purpose and whether any invitation or other evidence is required. This website's tourist product is intended for tourism. If your visit falls outside that scope, resolve the category with immigration or the mission rather than entering inaccurate information to fit the available form.

Regional travel needs a country-by-country route check

A Nigerian passport is not automatically visa-exempt in Uganda because the journey is within Africa. Check Uganda's current list for the passport you hold and assess any other destinations separately. The East Africa Tourist Visa is a specific option for tourism in Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda; it does not replace every permission that might be needed along a wider African journey.

For example, a continuous holiday entering Uganda first and then visiting Rwanda is different from a journey entering Kenya first. The issuing country must be the first entry into the regional visa area. Put your confirmed country sequence beside the visa selection before applying. Once approved, carry the passport and authorisation and remember that admission remains Uganda immigration's decision at the border.

Questions from Nigerian travellers

Can Nigerian citizens apply online for a Uganda Tourist Visa?

Yes. Uganda's visa service is available online, and the Uganda High Commission in Abuja directs applicants to the electronic immigration system. Nigerian ordinary-passport holders should prepare the required evidence and obtain approval before travelling. Availability of an online application does not guarantee the result.

Does an enquiry to the High Commission in Abuja count as a visa application?

No. The High Commission provides guidance, but its visa-services page directs applications through the online system. An email enquiry, conversation or completed travel booking is not an immigration decision. Follow the application channel and keep the relevant reference and approval messages for your own file.

Is a Uganda tourist application suitable for a Nigerian student?

A person travelling to undertake studies should check the appropriate immigration permission rather than use a tourist product. Abuja's official guidance distinguishes studies from ordinary tourism and other visit purposes. Confirm the route with the host institution and immigration before submitting an application.

Can a Nigerian traveller use one regional visa for Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda?

The East Africa Tourist Visa is designed for tourism in those three countries. Apply through the country where you will first enter that regional area; a Uganda-issued visa requires Uganda first. Check the actual itinerary and the current category requirements before choosing the regional option.

How much is a Uganda visa for Nigerian citizens?

Uganda Visa's total price per applicant is USD 99 for a Tourist Visa and USD 199 for an East Africa Tourist Visa. Multiple Visa costs USD 199 for 6 or 12 months, or USD 299 for 24 months. The selected total appears before you send your application.

How long does a Uganda eVisa take to process?

The review time depends on the visa category, completeness of the application and immigration checks. Submit before travel and allow time for further document requests. Your intended arrival date is not a promised decision date. Monitor the email address used for the application.

How long can I stay, and when should I use my approval?

A single-entry visit can be granted for up to three months; your issued permission controls the actual stay. Uganda Immigration says the approval authorisation must be used within 90 days of approval. The travel window and the stay granted are different. Read both before departure.
