Do South African citizens need a visa for Uganda?
South African citizens using ordinary passports need a visa for a tourist visit to Uganda and can apply for an eVisa before travel. Uganda lists South Africa under diplomatic and official passport arrangements, not its general ordinary-passport exemption list. Prepare the application against your actual travel passport, check at least six months of passport validity and wait for immigration approval before departure.

Why the South African passport exemption can be confusing
Search results sometimes reduce a visa agreement to the names of the two countries. Uganda's published list is more specific: South Africa appears in the section for holders of diplomatic and official passports. An ordinary South African passport used for a private holiday does not gain that exemption merely because a bilateral visa agreement exists.
Check the document type printed in your passport before choosing a product. If you hold a diplomatic or official passport and travel on official duties, confirm the applicable arrangement through the relevant authorities rather than using this ordinary-passport tourist guide. If another member of your party holds a different nationality, assess that person's passport separately; one traveller's exemption does not cover the group.

Resolve passport renewal before entering visa details
DIRCO advises South Africans to obtain valid travel documents before leaving the country and to investigate destination rules when a passport is nearing expiry or has little blank space. For Uganda, the tourist guidance specifies at least six months of validity. If you need to renew, organise that first so that the passport copy, number and expiry entered in the application are those you will actually use.
Keep copies apart from the original and leave an accessible copy with someone you trust. If the passport is lost during the holiday, report it locally and contact the South African mission for the relevant consular process. An emergency document is a different travel situation from a normal passport; do not assume an existing approval will automatically transfer to a replacement document.

Renewing a South African passport before a Uganda holiday
Planning example: A South African traveller is replacing a passport before departure. The passport used for the application needs to match the document they intend to carry into Uganda.
- Check the new biodata page and validity before copying details from an older saved application.
- Use the ordinary-passport guidance; a diplomatic arrangement should not be applied to every South African document.
- Keep DIRCO registration and consular assistance separate from the Uganda visa process.

Visa options and total prices
Choose by your destinations and entry pattern. These are Uganda Visa totals per applicant in US dollars.
Planning more than one country? Read the East Africa Tourist Visa requirements and first-entry guide. For repeated Uganda visits, compare the 6-, 12- and 24-month Multiple Entry choices. Immigration decides approval and the stay permitted.
Separate a Uganda visit from a wider African itinerary
For example, a holiday with one arrival in Uganda followed by a return to South Africa can be assessed as a Uganda single-entry tourism trip. If you instead plan Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya in one continuous regional holiday, compare the East Africa Tourist Visa and the first country you will enter. The Uganda-issued version requires first entry through Uganda.
The regional visa is specific to those three countries. It is not a general African travel permission and does not cover a Tanzanian extension or a return leg through another country's immigration controls. Lay out each entry and exit on the itinerary. A flight connection and an actual admission to a connecting country may require different checks, so verify the transit details with the carrier and that country's authorities.

Complete a final review before leaving South Africa
Check the first accommodation address, arrival point and planned length of the Uganda stay together rather than copying them from separate old bookings. If a tour organiser has changed the first night's hotel, update your preparation notes before completing the form. Keep your approval accessible with the passport and the booking details that explain the holiday.
DIRCO distinguishes a visitor's visa from permission to work, study or reside abroad. A safari followed by a job assignment should therefore be checked for the actual activities, even if the total trip is short. For a genuine holiday, use the guided application after gathering your documents; for employment or residence plans, establish the appropriate immigration route before selecting a tourism product.

Questions from South African travellers
Are all South African passports visa-free for Uganda?
No. Uganda's published exemption for South Africa appears under diplomatic and official passport holders. South African tourists using ordinary passports should follow the visa application route. Confirm a different passport type or official-duty arrangement with the relevant authorities before relying on an exemption.

Should I renew my South African passport before applying?
Renew first if the passport you intend to use will not meet Uganda's validity conditions. Apply using the resulting passport particulars and copy. A visa prepared against a passport you later replace can create a mismatch, so ask immigration how to handle any replacement after submission.

Can one visa cover a South African traveller's Uganda and Rwanda holiday?
The East Africa Tourist Visa can cover tourism in Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya. When issued through Uganda, Uganda must be your first entry into that region. Check the actual country sequence and conditions rather than choosing solely from the list of destinations on your tour brochure.

Will DIRCO obtain the Uganda visa for me?
DIRCO's travel guidance says it does not obtain visas or work, study and residence permits for prospective travellers. Its consular role is different from Uganda's immigration application process. Arrange the correct visa before departure and retain the application's own reference for follow-up.

How much is a Uganda visa for South African citizens?
Uganda Visa's total price per applicant is USD 99 for a Tourist Visa and USD 199 for an East Africa Tourist Visa. Multiple Visa costs USD 199 for 6 or 12 months, or USD 299 for 24 months. The selected total appears before you send your application.
How long does a Uganda eVisa take to process?
The review time depends on the visa category, completeness of the application and immigration checks. Submit before travel and allow time for further document requests. Your intended arrival date is not a promised decision date. Monitor the email address used for the application.

How long can I stay, and when should I use my approval?
A single-entry visit can be granted for up to three months; your issued permission controls the actual stay. Uganda Immigration says the approval authorisation must be used within 90 days of approval. The travel window and the stay granted are different. Read both before departure.
