United Kingdom passport guide

Uganda eVisa for British Citizens

For a Uganda holiday on a full British citizen passport, apply online before travel and prepare for the checks at arrival. UK residence, British nationality categories and a regional safari itinerary are separate questions. Use this guide to identify the passport scope and keep your booking details consistent with the journey.

The short answer

Do British citizens need a visa for Uganda?

Yes. Travellers using a full British citizen passport need a visa for Uganda and must apply online. GOV.UK says the passport must expire at least six months after arrival and advises printing the authorisation letter for presentation on arrival. These instructions concern the full British citizen passport; other British travel-document categories should be checked separately.

Check the nationality printed on the British passport

The FCDO's Uganda entry guidance expressly covers a full British citizen passport. Do not assume the same instructions automatically settle the position for every British nationality category, emergency document or travel document. If your passport category differs, contact the Ugandan authorities with its exact description before selecting the ordinary tourist route.

Living in the UK is also distinct from holding British citizenship. A resident travelling on an Indian, Chinese or other passport should review the guide for that passport and enter their actual residence separately. For a family travelling together, verify the passport of each person rather than applying one traveller's nationality to the entire booking.

Choose the visa after checking the package's border order

A Uganda-only safari and a regional holiday can look similar in a tour brochure while requiring different permissions. Ask the operator to show the first entry country, each international border crossing and the last departure. Use that sequence to decide whether you need one Uganda entry or the regional tourist option.

The East Africa Tourist Visa covers tourism in Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda, with entry first through the issuing country. A Uganda-first holiday including Rwanda can fit that framework. A package beginning with a Kenya stay should be checked with the Kenyan issuing route instead. If Tanzania or another country is included, assess those entries separately before assuming the regional visa covers the whole holiday.

Your application decision

A British passport and a Uganda–Rwanda holiday

Planning example: A British citizen’s holiday starts at Entebbe and continues to Rwanda. The first regional entry and the passport category are the useful starting points; a UK home address does not answer either question.

  • Confirm that this British-citizen guide matches the category on the passport you will use.
  • Check the regional route if Rwanda is part of the holiday; do not describe the trip as Uganda-only just because the first hotel is there.
  • If travelling on two passports, keep the visa application and entry document consistent and check return-document requirements separately.

Get your documents ready

Uganda eVisa requirements for British passport holders

For a Tourist Visa, prepare these files and your travel details. Use the passport you will carry to Uganda. The application checklist changes when you select a different visa category.

  • Passport biodata page

A clear copy of the details page. Your passport needs at least six months of validity.

  • Recent passport photograph

A clear passport-style photograph taken within the last six months.

  • Return ticket

Your return flight or onward travel booking.

  • Accommodation and travel plan

Have your Uganda accommodation address, intended arrival date, entry point and planned stay ready. Keep booking details and a tour plan available if requested.

Upload preparation

The live portal instructions specify JPEG, PNG, BMP or PDF, 5–250 KB per file, with supporting documents in English. Keep the original documents for travel. Further evidence may be requested.

Multiple Visa

From USD 199

For repeated visits to Uganda: USD 199 for 6 or 12 months, or USD 299 for 24 months. Validity does not mean you can stay continuously for that entire period.

Additional evidence includes police clearance, two Uganda referee letters, a reason for multiple entry and proof of Uganda entries and exits during the previous year.

Review Multiple Visa →

Planning more than one country? Read the East Africa Tourist Visa requirements and first-entry guide. For repeated Uganda visits, compare the 6-, 12- and 24-month Multiple Entry choices. Immigration decides approval and the stay permitted.

Plan the UK return document as well as the Uganda entry

For British dual nationals, the document needed to return to the UK is a separate preparation item from the Uganda visa. GOV.UK's Uganda guidance states that British citizens returning to the UK must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement. Check that point before departure if you intend to travel with more than one nationality document.

For your Uganda application, use the passport you intend to present for that entry and keep its details consistent through the application and travel documents. If you are considering a different passport because it may have an exemption, confirm the consequences with the authorities before applying; changing documents halfway through the process can leave your permission and travel identity misaligned.

Put the approval letter in your cabin documents

The FCDO describes an emailed authorisation letter with a barcode and advises printing it for arrival. An application acknowledgement is different from that authorisation. Once an approval is issued, read its passport details and travel conditions before departure, and keep the printed copy with the passport rather than in checked luggage.

As a practical handover to your tour company, agree where to meet after the airport formalities and keep your first accommodation contact accessible offline. Review current FCDO advice and the areas included in the itinerary close to departure. A visa authorisation does not establish that a particular tour route remains suitable or that every booking condition has been met.

Questions from British travellers

Does this guide cover a British National (Overseas) passport?

The FCDO entry page used here is specifically for full British citizen passports. If yours is a British National (Overseas) passport or another British travel document, confirm the applicable route with Uganda immigration or the Ugandan High Commission using the exact document category.

Can I use UK residence as the nationality for my Uganda application?

Enter the nationality of the passport used for the journey and supply UK residence separately where requested. A UK residence permission does not itself make you a British citizen. Check each family member's travel document when a booking includes different nationalities.

Do British dual nationals need to prepare a document for returning to the UK?

Yes. GOV.UK says British citizens returning to the UK must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement. Review the current return requirements before leaving, alongside the separate passport and permission you will use for entering Uganda.

Should I print the Uganda authorisation letter received in the UK?

Yes. The FCDO advises printing the emailed authorisation letter with its barcode to show on arrival. Check that it is the approval document and that the passport details are correct. Keep it accessible with your passport during the journey.

How much is a Uganda visa for British citizens?

Uganda Visa's total price per applicant is USD 99 for a Tourist Visa and USD 199 for an East Africa Tourist Visa. Multiple Visa costs USD 199 for 6 or 12 months, or USD 299 for 24 months. The selected total appears before you send your application.

How long does a Uganda eVisa take to process?

The review time depends on the visa category, completeness of the application and immigration checks. Submit before travel and allow time for further document requests. Your intended arrival date is not a promised decision date. Monitor the email address used for the application.

How long can I stay, and when should I use my approval?

A single-entry visit can be granted for up to three months; your issued permission controls the actual stay. Uganda Immigration says the approval authorisation must be used within 90 days of approval. The travel window and the stay granted are different. Read both before departure.
