Australia passport guide

Uganda eVisa for Australian Citizens

Australian travellers planning Uganda should organise the full journey, including stopovers and the return leg, before selecting a visa. Your passport, border sequence and holiday activities determine what to check. This guide helps you connect those decisions with the online application and identify official Australian resources for preparation and consular help.

The short answer

Do Australian citizens need a visa for Uganda?

Australian ordinary-passport holders need a visa for a visit to Uganda. Smartraveller directs travellers to Uganda's online application for either a Uganda visa or the East Africa Tourist Visa. Apply before travel using the passport you will carry, and check the transit and return conditions for your itinerary. A regional visa covers tourism in Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda, with the issuing country as the first entry point.

Check every stopover in the journey from Australia

Prepare a route sheet covering your departure from Australia, each connection, arrival in Uganda and eventual return. Check whether you remain airside or cross immigration at a stopover. A Uganda visa does not decide another country's transit or entry requirements. Changing airports, collecting baggage on separate tickets or adding an overnight stay are reasons to check the exact arrangements with the carrier and relevant authorities.

Smartraveller advises checking the entry requirements of transit and onward destinations and contacting the airline for current conditions. Do that again if a booking changes. Place the actual Uganda arrival date in your preparation notes: the date you leave Australia may be different. This small distinction helps keep your accommodation, airport transfer and application travel dates consistent.

Resolve passport questions before completing the form

Check the passport's expiry date early, including the requirements of countries used in transit. Uganda's tourist instructions require at least six months of passport validity. If you need a replacement Australian passport, organise it before entering the old passport number into an application intended for the new document. Compare the names on your travel booking with the passport details page rather than relying on a familiar shortened name.

Smartraveller also flags that an X gender marker may create entry or transit questions in some destinations. If this applies to your travel document, confirm acceptance with the relevant destination authorities before relying on a standard application checklist. The same practical principle applies to emergency documents: an online form submission does not itself establish that a particular document will be accepted for travel.

Your application decision

An Australian long-haul trip: use the Uganda arrival date

Planning example: An Australian traveller leaves home before arriving in Uganda after an overnight connection. The departure date on the first flight and the intended Uganda entry date may differ.

  • Read the full flight itinerary and enter the intended Uganda arrival date in the relevant field.
  • Check stopover entry conditions separately; the Uganda visa does not answer another country’s transit rules.
  • Review the passport details before uploading; resolve a special-document or marker question with the relevant authority rather than changing the passport information.

Get your documents ready

Uganda eVisa requirements for Australian passport holders

For a Tourist Visa, prepare these files and your travel details. Use the passport you will carry to Uganda. The application checklist changes when you select a different visa category.

  • Passport biodata page

A clear copy of the details page. Your passport needs at least six months of validity.

  • Recent passport photograph

A clear passport-style photograph taken within the last six months.

  • Return ticket

Your return flight or onward travel booking.

  • Accommodation and travel plan

Have your Uganda accommodation address, intended arrival date, entry point and planned stay ready. Keep booking details and a tour plan available if requested.

Upload preparation

The live portal instructions specify JPEG, PNG, BMP or PDF, 5–250 KB per file, with supporting documents in English. Keep the original documents for travel. Further evidence may be requested.

Visa options and total prices

Tourist Visa

USD 99

One tourist visit to Uganda. A stay of up to three months can be granted; follow the conditions on your authorisation.

Start Tourist Visa →

East Africa Tourist Visa

USD 199

Tourism in Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda for 90 days. Enter Uganda first when applying through Uganda. It ends if you leave the three-country area and is not renewable.

Prepare a detailed itinerary in addition to the tourist documents.

Choose East Africa Tourist Visa →

Multiple Visa

From USD 199

For repeated visits to Uganda: USD 199 for 6 or 12 months, or USD 299 for 24 months. Validity does not mean you can stay continuously for that entire period.

Additional evidence includes police clearance, two Uganda referee letters, a reason for multiple entry and proof of Uganda entries and exits during the previous year.

Review Multiple Visa →

Planning more than one country? Read the East Africa Tourist Visa requirements and first-entry guide. For repeated Uganda visits, compare the 6-, 12- and 24-month Multiple Entry choices. Immigration decides approval and the stay permitted.

Match a longer East Africa holiday to its border crossings

For a holiday with one entry into Uganda, a single-entry Tourist Visa may match the travel plan. A longer trip combining Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda needs a regional assessment. The East Africa Tourist Visa permits tourism across those three countries for 90 days, with the issuing country as the first point of entry. Check the sequence before selecting Uganda as the application country.

Imagine a journey that arrives in Uganda, visits Rwanda and then returns to Uganda before flying home: compare the regional conditions with that complete plan. Now consider adding another country outside the participating area before the return. Leaving the area ends the regional visa, so the later Uganda entry cannot simply be assumed covered. Keep this decision separate from any tour operator's use of the word multi-country.

Build a travel folder you can use away from home

Keep your visa reference, issued authorisation, accommodation contact and tour confirmation accessible without depending entirely on a live connection. Use an email address you can monitor while away, including for any additional-document request. Save a separate backup of important details and tell a trusted contact how to reach you through the itinerary. These are preparation suggestions rather than extra immigration uploads.

Use Smartraveller for current route-specific advice and official consular contacts. It identifies limited assistance through the Australian Consulate in Kampala and full consular assistance through the Australian High Commission in Kenya. Save the official contact page rather than assuming every service is available locally. Before departure, review the latest Australian advice and check how changes to the trip affect your insurance and transport arrangements.

Questions from Australian travellers

Can I apply for a Uganda tourist visa while living in Australia?

An Australian passport holder can use the online application route before travel. If you live in Australia but hold another passport, use that passport's nationality when checking the requirements. Your Australian address and immigration status are residence details; they do not turn another passport into an Australian one.

Does my Uganda eVisa cover an overnight stopover elsewhere?

No. Check the entry or transit rules for the country where the stopover takes place. Whether you leave the airport, collect baggage or travel on separate tickets can affect what you need to confirm. Smartraveller recommends checking transit destinations and contacting the airline for the current conditions.

Where can Australians find consular assistance for Uganda?

Smartraveller identifies limited consular assistance at the Australian Consulate in Kampala and full assistance through the Australian High Commission in Kenya. Check the official current contact details and scope before relying on a particular service. Consular assistance is separate from Uganda's decision on a visa application.

Can I use a regional visa again after visiting a fourth country?

The East Africa Tourist Visa ends when you leave its participating area of Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda. If a fourth country appears between two planned visits to Uganda, have the later entry assessed before travel. Do not assume that unused days on the regional visa preserve permission after leaving the area.

How much is a Uganda visa for Australian citizens?

Uganda Visa's total price per applicant is USD 99 for a Tourist Visa and USD 199 for an East Africa Tourist Visa. Multiple Visa costs USD 199 for 6 or 12 months, or USD 299 for 24 months. The selected total appears before you send your application.

How long does a Uganda eVisa take to process?

The review time depends on the visa category, completeness of the application and immigration checks. Submit before travel and allow time for further document requests. Your intended arrival date is not a promised decision date. Monitor the email address used for the application.

How long can I stay, and when should I use my approval?

A single-entry visit can be granted for up to three months; your issued permission controls the actual stay. Uganda Immigration says the approval authorisation must be used within 90 days of approval. The travel window and the stay granted are different. Read both before departure.
