Do Canadian citizens need a visa for Uganda?
Canadian ordinary-passport holders need a visa to visit Uganda and must apply for an electronic visa before travelling. Uganda's tourist guidance requires a passport with at least six months of validity; Canada's travel advisory is more conservative and specifies six months beyond your expected departure from Uganda. Check that advice and your carrier's conditions before applying, particularly if your passport is close to renewal.

Use Canada's passport advice when checking your dates
A passport can be valid today and still be unsuitable for a planned journey. Canada's Uganda advisory says a regular Canadian passport should remain valid for at least six months beyond the date you expect to leave Uganda. Place that departure date beside the passport expiry date before completing your application. This gives you a concrete check rather than relying on the passport's original issue period.
The same advisory notes that temporary passports and emergency travel documents can have different entry conditions. If you are using one, confirm acceptance with the relevant authorities before treating the standard ordinary-passport checklist as applicable. For a replacement passport, resolve the document change before submitting details from the older booklet. Check the airline's requirements too, as its carriage rules may be more restrictive.

Separate a holiday from volunteering or professional activity
Some Canadian trips mix sightseeing with an organisation's programme. Before choosing tourism, list what you will actually do in Uganda. Canada's advisory states that work, including volunteer work, cannot be performed with a Tourist Visa. An unpaid placement, a charitable connection or an invitation from a local organisation does not by itself settle the appropriate immigration category.
If your visit includes volunteering, employment, research or another activity beyond a holiday, describe it accurately to Uganda Immigration or the appropriate mission and obtain category guidance. Do this before committing to a tourist application. For a straightforward leisure trip, the practical preparation is different: assemble the passport, travel and accommodation details for your holiday without adding an unsupported professional purpose.

Check Canadian passport dates against the whole holiday
Planning example: A Canadian traveller has a passport that expires after the Uganda holiday. Before starting, compare its expiry with the planned arrival and departure, rather than checking whether it is simply valid today.
- Read the Canadian departure-based validity advice alongside Uganda’s entry requirement; the two reference dates are different.
- Resolve an emergency or temporary travel-document question separately from the ordinary-passport guide.
- For a tourism-only itinerary, prepare the Tourist files; a volunteer placement requires its own purpose check.

Build a country-by-country route for an East Africa holiday
For a Canadian traveller comparing a Uganda-only holiday with a longer regional trip, the important question is where you cross borders. One Uganda visit and an onward departure call for a different assessment from a journey returning to Uganda after Kenya or Rwanda. Write the entry and exit sequence in order, including a separate transit country if the ticket takes you outside the region.
The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda for tourism, with the issuing country as the first entry point. It ends when you leave the three-country area. If your plans involve another country between two Uganda stays, do not assume that a regional visa will cover the later return. Border operating conditions and the permission required for your route need separate confirmation.

Check the whole Canadian journey before finalising travel
Read Canada's current Uganda advisory before deciding to travel and again before departure. A visa assessment and a travel advisory answer different questions: being able to request immigration permission does not mean that the Canadian government recommends the trip. Review the advisory's current risk level, regional guidance and return-entry information against your planned route, and discuss relevant conditions with your insurer and carrier.
For the application itself, keep your surname, given names and passport number consistent across the form and bookings. Save the actual approval, when issued, alongside the document used to apply; a submission reference only identifies the request. Plan how you will access follow-up emails while travelling. If the itinerary changes, revisit the entry order and dates rather than assuming an earlier application still describes the new holiday.

Questions from Canadian travellers
How much passport validity should a Canadian traveller allow?
Canada's Uganda advisory specifies at least six months beyond the date you expect to leave Uganda for a regular Canadian passport. Check that advice alongside Uganda's requirements and your carrier's rules. Renew first if needed so the application is based on the passport you will use for the journey.

Can a Canadian volunteer use the Tourist Visa application?
Do not select tourism to cover a volunteer placement. Canada's advisory states that a Tourist Visa does not permit work, including volunteering. Ask Uganda Immigration or the appropriate Ugandan mission about the correct category for the specific activity, even if the work is unpaid or arranged by a charity.

Does this guide cover a Canadian emergency travel document?
This guide is prepared for ordinary passports. Canada warns that temporary passports and emergency travel documents can be subject to different entry rules. Confirm acceptance and application instructions with the relevant authorities before travelling. Do not assume that a standard visa application resolves a travel-document acceptance question.

Does a Uganda visa replace checking Canadian travel advice?
No. The visa concerns permission from Uganda; Canada's advisory covers risks and other travel considerations. Read its current risk level, entry and exit guidance and information relevant to your return. Conditions can change after an application is submitted, so check again before taking the trip.

How much is a Uganda visa for Canadian citizens?
Uganda Visa's total price per applicant is USD 99 for a Tourist Visa and USD 199 for an East Africa Tourist Visa. Multiple Visa costs USD 199 for 6 or 12 months, or USD 299 for 24 months. The selected total appears before you send your application.
How long does a Uganda eVisa take to process?
The review time depends on the visa category, completeness of the application and immigration checks. Submit before travel and allow time for further document requests. Your intended arrival date is not a promised decision date. Monitor the email address used for the application.

How long can I stay, and when should I use my approval?
A single-entry visit can be granted for up to three months; your issued permission controls the actual stay. Uganda Immigration says the approval authorisation must be used within 90 days of approval. The travel window and the stay granted are different. Read both before departure.
