Do American citizens need a visa for Uganda?
Yes. American citizens travelling on an ordinary US passport need a visa for a tourist visit to Uganda and should apply online before travel. Use a passport book with at least six months of validity after arrival. For one Uganda holiday, review the Tourist Visa; for a Uganda-first holiday also covering Kenya and Rwanda, compare the East Africa Tourist Visa.

Use your US passport book for the journey
A US passport card is not valid for international air travel. Take the passport book and use its biodata page for the application. Check it before arranging the visa, especially if you normally use a passport card for nearby land or sea trips. The State Department's Uganda guidance also specifies a blank page for an entry stamp.
For preparation, compare the name on your passport book with your airline reservation and safari booking. Include the given names shown in the passport rather than a familiar short name. If renewal is needed, obtain the replacement book before submitting details tied to the old passport; ask immigration how any already-issued authorisation must be handled.

Map the entries around your safari itinerary
Consider the border sequence rather than the number of game drives or lodges. An itinerary arriving in Entebbe, travelling inside Uganda and departing from Uganda is a different visa decision from a trip that enters Kenya or Rwanda before returning. Write each international entry and exit on one timeline before selecting a category.
For example, a Uganda-first holiday continuing through Rwanda and Kenya may fit the regional tourist visa. A safari also including Tanzania needs a separate assessment: Tanzania is outside that regional permission, and leaving the three-country area ends the East Africa Tourist Visa. This is an itinerary example, not confirmation that a particular route or border crossing will be available on your dates.

Two Uganda visits on a US passport: choose by your entries
Planning example: An American traveller plans one Uganda safari now and a separate Uganda holiday later. A second international arrival is a different question from moving between several lodges on one visit.
- Count the arrivals in Uganda, rather than the number of hotels or tours.
- Use your passport book when preparing the application; do not upload a US passport card as the flight document.
- Before selecting Multiple Visa, check the travel-history and referee evidence; two planned trips alone do not establish approval.

Uganda eVisa requirements for American passport holders
For a Tourist Visa, prepare these files and your travel details. Use the passport you will carry to Uganda. The application checklist changes when you select a different visa category.
Passport biodata page
A clear copy of the details page. Your passport needs at least six months of validity.
Recent passport photograph
A clear passport-style photograph taken within the last six months.
Return ticket
Your return flight or onward travel booking.
Accommodation and travel plan
Have your Uganda accommodation address, intended arrival date, entry point and planned stay ready. Keep booking details and a tour plan available if requested.
The live portal instructions specify JPEG, PNG, BMP or PDF, 5–250 KB per file, with supporting documents in English. Keep the original documents for travel. Further evidence may be requested.
Checklist: live immigration portal and tourist visa guidance. Check current entry-document notices and your departure-country travel advice before travel; older category checklists can differ.
Visa options and total prices
Choose by your destinations and entry pattern. These are Uganda Visa totals per applicant in US dollars.
Planning more than one country? Read the East Africa Tourist Visa requirements and first-entry guide. For repeated Uganda visits, compare the 6-, 12- and 24-month Multiple Entry choices. Immigration decides approval and the stay permitted.
Keep a holiday separate from volunteering or work
An American trip described informally as a mission visit can involve more than tourism. The US Embassy's guidance notes that missionary and volunteer activities frequently require a work visa. Ask the organisation hosting you to describe the actual activities and check the correct permission with Uganda immigration before choosing a tourist product.
For a holiday, make your documents describe the sightseeing trip you intend to take. For an assignment, placement or unpaid service, do not assume that being unpaid makes the activity tourism. Resolving the purpose first helps avoid completing a tourist application that cannot support the visit you have planned.

Prepare a departure file and a way to receive updates
Before departure, keep your passport, approval document when issued, travel bookings and the accommodation contacts together. Save readable offline copies as a practical backup. For a long itinerary, give yourself a way to check application messages while travelling to a connecting airport or staying away from your usual US email access.
Read the current State Department advice for the particular areas in your tour. STEP enrolment is a separate US service for embassy alerts and emergency contact; it does not submit your Uganda visa application. Discuss route changes with your tour operator, and check the permission granted rather than treating an airline ticket or an application reference as proof that entry has been approved.

Questions from American travellers
Can I use my US passport card to fly to Uganda?
No. The US passport card cannot be used for international air travel. Use your passport book for the flight and the Uganda application, and check its remaining validity and available pages before submitting passport details.

Does an American safari that includes Tanzania fit the East Africa Tourist Visa?
The regional visa covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda only. Tanzania is outside that area. Include the Tanzanian entry and any return to Uganda in your planning, because leaving the three-country area ends the regional permission and changes what you must arrange.

Is a Uganda Tourist Visa enough for a US volunteer or church placement?
Do not assume so. The US Embassy says missionary and volunteer work frequently needs work permission. Give immigration and your host an accurate description of the activities, including unpaid duties, and establish the correct route before purchasing a tourist service.

Does enrolling in STEP also arrange my Uganda visa?
No. STEP provides US embassy updates and helps with emergency contact. Your Uganda visa application is a separate process. You can use both: keep embassy alerts available for travel planning while monitoring the application channel used for your visa request.

How much is a Uganda visa for American citizens?
Uganda Visa's total price per applicant is USD 99 for a Tourist Visa and USD 199 for an East Africa Tourist Visa. Multiple Visa costs USD 199 for 6 or 12 months, or USD 299 for 24 months. The selected total appears before you send your application.
How long does a Uganda eVisa take to process?
The review time depends on the visa category, completeness of the application and immigration checks. Submit before travel and allow time for further document requests. Your intended arrival date is not a promised decision date. Monitor the email address used for the application.

How long can I stay, and when should I use my approval?
A single-entry visit can be granted for up to three months; your issued permission controls the actual stay. Uganda Immigration says the approval authorisation must be used within 90 days of approval. The travel window and the stay granted are different. Read both before departure.
